Tanzania
Tanzania is home to the incredible Mount Kilimanjaro, Lake Victoria and many more man-made and natural wonders! Our Kilimanjaro challenge will take you up the Machame route for the experience of a life time.
About Tanzania
Tanzania is a real jewel on the coast of East Africa. An adventurer’s paradise, it is home to Mount Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake and source of the Nile. At 5,895 metres above sea level, Kilimanjaro is the world’s largest free-standing mountain and a must for those who love a challenge. Starting below in the bushland and savannah, you’ll climb through different ecosystems of rainforest, alpine meadows and moorlands, before arriving at its rocky, snow capped peak. With Challenges Abroad, you’ll join us in tackling the Machame route, a multi-day hike that will fully immerse you in the mountain experience.
A must for anyone who wants to channel their inner David Attenborough, a Challenges Abroad trip in Tanzania offers the chance to see up-close the amazing wildlife of the area. With the largest concentration of animals per square kilometre, you won’t be disappointed. Tanzania is the quintessential Serengeti safari experience with elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, big cats and predators, and even crocodiles, all roaming their natural habitat. With so many locations around the country for wildlife spotting, including Lake Victoria, Lake Natron and the Ngorongoro conservation area, you’ll have the opportunity for real insights into conservation efforts. Venturing off-shore, you’ll find the tropical paradise islands of Zanzibar, with waters full of quaint fishing boats, whale sharks, and coral reefs.
Tanzania has a prominently Swahili culture, which can trace its roots as far back as the 6th century. There is also clear influence from other areas of Africa, as well as notable Arab influence. Many tribes inhabit rural areas, including the Maasai. For many people, the natural wonders of Tanzania are an experience that can’t be beaten.
By taking part in a Challenges Abroad project while you’re here, you’ll be able to be part of the important work that goes into ensuring the sustainability of communities there, and reducing inequalities they face. Despite the increased tourism of recent years, Tanzania is still a developing nation, and the impacts of climate change and land degradation are having negative effects on many of its rural villages.
