Becoming a Global Citizen:
A Journey Beyond Borders
At first glance, being a Global Citizen might seem like it’s all about travelling or living in various countries. While a love for exploring the world can lead you in that direction, Global Citizenship is about so much more. It’s about learning, understanding, and recognising your role in making a positive impact on the world around you.
What is Global Citizenship?
According to the UN, Global Citizenship involves the social, political, environmental, and economic actions of globally-minded individuals and communities. It’s not just about where you are; it’s about understanding that you are part of a global network, with a responsibility to contribute to positive change.
To put it simply, Global Citizenship is about being aware of how your actions can impact people across the globe, embracing cultural differences, and ensuring that resources are shared fairly while protecting human rights. It’s a broad concept, and its meaning may vary depending on personal experiences. At Challenges Abroad, we believe that being a Global Citizen means recognising that we all have a role to play in creating a world with equal opportunities for everyone.
Why is Global Citizenship Important?
At its core, Global Citizenship is about awareness, responsibility, and participation. By being aware of our place in the world and comparing it to others, we naturally feel a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate. Whether it’s addressing human rights issues or climate change, every small action can lead to bigger impacts. At Challenges Abroad, we see how even small acts—like picking up litter—can inspire others and create lasting change.
Global Citizenship offers hope for a more sustainable and equal future, and it’s an important step toward making the world a better place.
“Being a Global Citizen to me is being aware of the world around me, my place in it and how I can make a positive impact. It is acknowledging that no particular way of being is better than another and that our differences are what make the world so amazing.”
Louise, Global Citizen
How Can You Become a Global Citizen?
Becoming a Global Citizen is simpler than you might think. It starts with being more aware of the world around you and your role in it. You need to take an active part in your community and work towards making the world more peaceful, sustainable, and fair.
Here are three steps to guide you on your journey to Global Citizenship:
Investigate Local and Global Issues
Start by exploring both local and global issues of social injustice. This could be as simple as a Google search, or by getting involved in your local community. Challenge your preconceptions and deepen your understanding of the world.Make Global Connections
Building global connections might seem daunting, but it’s easier than you think! For example international students at university or school, start a conversation, exchange views, and broaden your perspective.Take Action
Once you’ve done your research and made connections, it’s time to take action! Whether it’s volunteering locally, joining a programme overseas, or simply spreading awareness, your actions can make a significant difference. Every step, no matter how small, contributes to positive global change.
