Even though Peru has a booming tourism industry and has made great progress in recent years, it still faces significant social and economic challenges. Many communities live below the poverty line and struggle to access quality healthcare, education and income generation opportunities, which is why we need your help to make a change. On this internship you'll work hand in hand with our in-country team on a range of grass-roots programmes that will help create a brighter future for the local community, while developing crucial transferable skills. Depending on your area of study, you'll have the opportunity to complete an internship focusing on one of the following areas:
You'll delve into issues related to the accessibility and quality of education in our partner community. The education programmes you'll be working on generally support schools and Buddhist temples that reach out to underprivileged communities and students from the more disadvantaged sections of society. These organisations are generally underfunded, have few resources and have poor infrastructure. Your challenge will be to see how within this context, quality education can be accessible to the most underprivileged groups in the community.
You'll get the opportunity to understand and help resolve health issues in our partner community. You could be working with local health centres or local schools to understand key health issues, conduct assessments and help develop programmes to improve the health of the children and adults. We run health camps and health awareness workshops in the local community, as an intern you'll be able to shape the content for these activities based upon your understanding and research into the issues affecting the local community.
This is the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in a completely different setting to what you're used to. In the community where we work, concepts of business and commerce aren't common knowledge and income generation opportunities are limited. You'll work alongside our team to lead and develop business skills programmes, monitor current initiatives and see where there could be opportunity for income generation through social enterprise. Through your knowledge and an innovative approach you will be able to develop a range of programmes that will address economic development and improve the livelihoods of the most underprivileged members of the community.
You'll get real hands on experience of grass-roots community development programmes. You will work with our team to monitor and assess current programmes, conduct research and build partnerships with the local community. You may be focusing on enhancing programmes we current implement in the community or developing programmes based on opportunities identified in your research. Your focus will cover a range of issues including education, health and well-being and income generation opportunities.
My time in the jungle has honestly been such an incredible experience, learning from local communities about their wildlife, culture and way of life has truly been humbling!Volunteer - Tiana - Peru
I had an absolutely amazing time on my trip to Peru. Working with the children was so rewarding, the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu was the experience of a lifetime, the Amazon extension trip was an incredible ending to the entire adventure.Volunteer - Paige - Peru
